Disability Culture

Disability is part of human diversity. Some disabilities are visible and others are not. People’s needs and experiences vary. Barriers in buildings, websites and public services can keep people from taking part. So can harmful attitudes. Disability culture includes shared histories, art and efforts to create change.

Why it matters

Access means making places, information and activities easier to use. People with disabilities should have a say in the support they need. The UN disability rights treaty sets out rights to equal treatment and a full role in society. It puts dignity and choice at the centre.

Take action

Notice whether a school event, website or lesson excludes anyone. You could help improve captions, step-free access or clear writing. Follow the advice of people who use these supports. Explore education to think about how schools can offer more choices and remove barriers.
