Refugees have fled their countries because of persecution, conflict or violence. They need protection outside their home country. Leaving home can mean losing contact with family or missing school. The future may feel uncertain. Refugees bring skills, knowledge and hopes for their lives, just as anyone else does.
Why it matters
Protection involves more than reaching a safe place. People also need access to information, education, health care and fair procedures. Language barriers and discrimination can make this harder. UNHCR’s teaching resources explain displacement and challenge common misconceptions.
Take action
Learn from refugee-led organizations and listen to what people say they need. You could support a welcoming school activity, help share reliable local information or contribute to a community project. Respect people’s privacy. No one should have to share painful stories to get support or belong.
We live in the age of the refugee, the age of the exile.
