Technology

Technology can expand opportunities, but its benefits depend on access, design and how it is used.

Technology

Technology includes the tools and systems people create to solve problems. Digital tools help us communicate, learn, work and share ideas. They can connect people across long distances and make some tasks more accessible. Their value depends on whether they meet the needs of the people using them.

Why it matters

Not everyone has reliable internet, affordable devices or the skills to use them. This gap is called the digital divide. Technology also raises questions about privacy, ownership and who gets to make the rules. The International Telecommunication Union’s digital inclusion work looks at ways to expand access.

Take action

When trying a new tool, ask what problem it solves and who might be left out. Learn how it handles personal information and whether people with different abilities can use it. A useful technology project starts with listening to people, not simply choosing the newest device.

The production of too many useful things results in too many useless people.
