LGBT refers to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Sexual orientation concerns attraction, while gender identity concerns a person’s sense of their gender. These are different parts of human experience. People may use other terms. Everyone should be able to describe themselves in their own way.
Why it matters
Unfair treatment, harassment and violence can limit access to school, work and health care. The UN Human Rights Office explains how human rights apply to these issues. Laws and conditions vary, but everyone deserves dignity and protection from harm.
Take action
Use the names and pronouns people ask you to use, challenge harassment and respect privacy. Never disclose someone’s identity without their permission.
