Culture includes languages, stories, beliefs, art, food and everyday ways of living. It connects us to family and community. It also gives us ways to express who we are. People can belong to several cultures, and cultures change as people share ideas and experiences.
Why it matters
Learning about another culture takes more than noticing its food or festivals. It means listening and questioning stereotypes. People within a community can have very different views. Culture also connects with power: some groups have more control over which stories are heard. UNESCO’s work on culture explores cultural heritage, creativity and participation.
Take action
You could attend a community event, learn from an artist or invite people to share stories on their own terms. Respect boundaries around knowledge, images and traditions. Learning from others does not mean accepting unfair treatment. Everyone’s dignity and rights still matter.
A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.
