Sports

Sport, play and physical activity offer ways to move, develop skills and connect with others. People can compete or play for fun, on their own or with others. Enjoyment, safety and access matter. There is no need to look a certain way or be an elite athlete.

Why it matters

Costs, inaccessible spaces and discrimination can keep people from taking part. Sports organizations also make decisions about fair play, athlete welfare and environmental impact. UNESCO’s work on sport explores how sport can help people learn and take part when these duties are taken seriously.

Take action

Ask what would make an activity more welcoming in your school or neighbourhood. You could help offer low-cost options, adapt a game or give participants more choice. Connect with disability rights and culture to think about access from the start. Listen to the people taking part. The same approach will not work for everyone.

Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.
