Literacy includes reading and writing. It also means using those skills to understand and share ideas. We use these skills to read instructions, compare sources, tell stories and make choices. Skills develop through practice and can keep growing throughout life.
Why it matters
People may miss the chance to learn because of cost or gaps in schooling. They may face disability barriers or lack books in their language. Finding reading or writing hard does not mean someone lacks intelligence or ability. UNESCO’s literacy work supports learning for young people and adults in different settings.
Take action
You could support a library project, join peer tutoring or help make information easier to understand. Ask learners what would help. Do not assume you know their needs. Our page on languages explores why access to learning in a familiar language also matters.
