Cultural diversity means that people express themselves and live in different ways. It includes languages, beliefs, traditions and creative work. People within a community do not all think or live alike. One story cannot represent everyone.
Why it matters
Respecting diversity goes beyond celebrating festivals or trying new foods. Ask who gets a say in decisions. Whose knowledge is valued? Racism and discrimination can limit those opportunities. UNESCO’s work on cultural expression explores ways to support diverse voices and creative participation.
Take action
Notice which perspectives are included in your school, library or local media. You could invite a wider range of contributors to a project or question a stereotype when you hear one. Listen before judging. Let people choose how to describe themselves and their lives.
