Freedom of Expression

Freedom of Expression

Freedom of expression includes the ability to seek, receive and share information and opinions. It supports journalism, art, public debate and the right to disagree. This freedom is recognized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Why it matters

The right raises difficult questions when speech threatens people or encourages harm. Rules must protect rights without becoming a way to silence criticism or unpopular views. UNESCO’s work on expression and the rule of law explores these challenges. Different countries have different laws, so a broad principle does not settle every case.

Take action

Practise discussing ideas with people who disagree with you. Ask for evidence, challenge a claim rather than attacking a person, and notice whose voices are missing. Supporting free expression includes making space for others to speak and thinking carefully about the effects of your own words.

If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all.
