Animal Rights

Animal welfare concerns animals’ physical and mental health. Animal rights asks whether, and how, humans should use animals. These ideas overlap, but they are not the same. Both ask us to think about our choices. This includes how we treat farm animals, pets and wildlife.

Why it matters

The World Organisation for Animal Health explains animal welfare. Decisions about animals can also affect jobs, traditions and the land around us. Understanding these links helps us compare different approaches. There may not be one answer that fits every setting.

Take action

You could learn about animal care, support a local group or find out how a product is made. For wildlife projects, look for work that protects habitats and involves nearby communities. Explore the environment to see how animal well-being connects with healthy places and human choices.

The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity.

Arthur Schopenhauer
