Greetings from different Indigenous languages with artist Wendy Walker

With one hand held in front of the other, students learn to create their own beat while drumming alongside musical artist, performer and storyteller Wendy Walker who is Cree, Métis and Mi’kmaq.

Her approach invites students to share together in a different creative format and she experiences delight with each classroom interaction.

In order to expose students to different perspectives across diverse Indigenous cultures, she incorporates words and teachings from different nations based on what she has learned through her relationships over the years. This fosters intercultural understanding and respect for the many Indigenous communities that are part of the program.

Having vibrant guests in the classroom to share their passion and talents with students also helps to cultivate confidence among learners as they enjoy participating in the activities and receive feedback from people outside of their small community.
