Originally published

Illiteracy is the inability to read or write. Illiteracy can be caused by the hindrance to a good education for multiple reasons such social, family or motivation problems. The rate of illiteracy is ascending by 32% according to a study by WSI (World Statistics Institute).
Illiteracy not only curbs a countries development but it also hinders the individual growth of a person to reach their full potential. This could also hinder their descendants from achieving a higher goal as illiteracy will be seen as a way of life.

How You Can Help
There are so many ways you can help a child realize their potential and that is by giving them an education. However, children in rural areas do not have the privileged of benefiting in education due to many factors such as: insufficient tuition fees, education centers beings afar off, no one in their family being literate, having to work at a young age and having no one to sponsor their education.
This is where you come in. You can help make education a reality for unprivileged children by:
1. Sponsor a child
Do you know a child who is not going to school? What is your community doing to help them? Don’t wait for change, be the change.
2. Donate exercise books and reading books
Become a mentor and motivate a child to literacy. You can help by showing interest in their education.
3. Donate monetary fund, clothes and useful supplies
Most children who do not go to school are held down by lack of funds. If you cannot find a child to help, why not donate to a local charity? Or even better, volunteer.
4. Create an event to raise awareness
Not everyone is aware that illiteracy exists. You can be that voice to the voiceless, make a fundraiser for your local charity and make a positive difference, one child at a time.
