I’ve always liked stories. My name is Sofía and I grew up in a place where people still grew corn: maíz, what keeps this country alive. I used to go with my friends to hang out in the fields and tell each other stories we’ve heard, stories about our other friends, out teachers, stories about our future and dreams. I really enjoyed that; I felt stories –like the maíz we ate and saw growing- were the fuel that made us do things, interact, think, work, feel alive.
Back then, I was so amazed by everything that happened around me. Because of my parents work, I had to move a lot: I even moved to the United States! The different places, the different people and different ways of interacting with them, inspired me. Being a foreigner made me aware and conscious of myself and the others. I could see beauty in all details, so I started writing and then taking pictures. That became very important for me.
When I went to high school I had to decide what kind of job I wanted to prepare for. I decided I wanted to tell stories. Then I moved to the city and technology started to be more important. I saw in technology a way –not only to learn and communicate but to express myself. I discovered Media and Communication could help me share with others the importance of getting to know other people’s problems and needs, and also let everyone know how we are all interconnected. I learned how to use Adobe’s programs, and with my friend Ivanov decided to start sharing the stories around us with the world. Communication is having something in common, and I think we all do. We all have to know how important it is to be a part of a community, to feel we are a part of a community. We all have to recognize that whatever we do (good or bad) is going to have an impact in others, and also the place we live in. Media helps me discover different, alternative worlds, while I share my own world with others.
