The abolition of slave trade in 1807 restores a lot of faith in humanity – our ability to see our faults, tackle the problem at hand and acknowledge equality of all the peoples. The abolition of the slave trade is so profound that it needs to be celebrated in this day.

What would have been better is not celebrating it at all – if only the slave trade had never happened – but we cannot change the past but only learn from it. The most important lesson to learn from it is how to abolish slave trade. What? Is that an error? No. The slave trade and its abolition can teach us one important lesson; how to abolish the slave trade called Modern day slavery aka Human Trafficking.

Human trafficking is the trade in humans, most commonly for the purpose of sexual slavery, forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation, extraction of organ or tissues, forced marriage and similar crude activities.

Wait, slave trade is still happening now? In the 21^st Century? It is unfortunately so and unless we learn from the past and do away with human trafficking, slavery will continue to destroy the lives of countless of voiceless victims.

HOW TO COMBAT MODERN DAY SLAVERY AS A YOUTH

BE INFORMED

Unless you understand the plight and circumstances of the victims, it is easy to ignore the existence of modern day slavery. Be informed on modern day slavery and spread what you know with others. We celebrate the abolition of slave trade and until you get informed, the day to celebrate the end of human trafficking is far reached.

BOYCOTT PRODUCTS

There are certain products that are brought to you cheaply and you indulge in them because the quality is so good. You are only able to enjoy them because you do not know the hands that are bleeding for nothing under the gun of irresponsible corporations to bring the product to you.

Learn about where your products come from in order to make more informed decisions about them. For example, do you know where your chocolate comes from?

RECORD & REPORT

It is easier to record these days with the prevalence of the smart phones and such related gadgets. It is easier to report with improved communication and technology. If you witness any crime going on, record it and report it. You can do this anonymously as well if you are afraid. Never let a crime go unheard of.

Raising awareness is the first step to eradicating human injustices.
