Jessica, most of commercial music are copyrighted and you need express permission from the artist.
However, many musicians choose to release their songs under Creative Commons licenses, which give you the legal right to use it.
If you don't know if the music you picked is free to use, it's better not to use it.

New (and old!) entrants, this is an example of the type of thing the discussion boards can keep you abreast of. The Indonesian government announced just yesterday that the *much* delayed presidential decree to enforce a moratorium on new forest concessions will be issued next month. Sounds great, right? Well, it's a step in the right direction, but in the discussion boards we'll get into the details in the days ahead (the devil is always in the details). Oil palm plantations are expected to be hard hit, but the moratorium will NOT apply for permits "for strategic national development, including geothermal and oil and gas exploration, power plants and large-scale rice and sugar plantations." I encourage you each to visit the Environment Forum to learn more on this and other related matters!

I've found this really interesting clip on youtube that talks about the history of oil and where it has lead us. It may not be directly about deforestation, but as all you conservationists know, everything is connected - this is really worth the watch.

This week Im taking year 6 students into Malaysia for a nature awareness and conservation trip and I will definitely show this deforestACTION school project to the teachers. Portals for proactive action like this are exactly what the world needs. I've never been filled with more hope.

so giving people 3 votes is a good idea, but shouldn't they be limited to only voting for each person one time? If the same person votes for me 3 times it should only be counted once.

@Nikolai: That sounds like a bug. Hopefully the people counting votes only count the first vote in such a situation.

Tira, please add your voice to the thread on the moratorium (see below). I've been swamped at work the past few days, but we'll be getting into the thick of the details there. Yes - bureaucracy, but also a tremendous amount of push and pull between different stakeholders with interests the forestry/agro sectors. There was a long fought battle between two versions of the decree - one stricter than the other, but both leaving *much* to be desired. As you likely know, the final version is full of loopholes that can and will be exploited in the months and years ahead.

Girl Scout cookies are an extremely popular and iconic treat here in the US. Getting manufacturers to remove palm oil from them would be a hugely symbolic victory. I must second Fabrice's encouragement that people sign the petition launched by two young scouts. Madi and Rhiannon are long-time supporters of Orangutan Outreach and they deserve our help! Hey guys! I just got a plug on BBC Bristol, and I'm going on Whitechapel FM in London on Weds. I've also managed to put a piece in my University newspaper and the Positive News website (http://www.positivenews.org.uk/) which should be up in the next few days and has 10s of thousands of supporters! I just found out this morning that I won my 2012 Fulbright Research Grant to Indonesia (Borneo)!!! All the more reason why I'm giving my candidacy for Project Borneo 3d EVERYTHING I've got. If I can learn from my longtime hero, Dr. Smits, I can bring those tools and that knowledge with me to the communities around the Gunung Palung National Park (home to the single largest population of orangutans left on Earth). Only if we greatly expand alternative livelihood initiatives in these communities can we hope to stem the tide of destruction in this critical last stronghold of orangutan habitat. I don't know if any of you have seen the amazing documentary from French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand call HOME.
This breathtaking work with fantastic aerial cinematography talks about climate-change issues, human impact on our precious resources and has some very strong messages of hope despite we we do to our planet.
This documentary has been financed by the French group PPR and made available for free to the public. You can see the full movie on Youtube here.
