Brigid Evans

I’m 17 and have lived in Australia my entire life. I’m a vegetarian, and passionate about animal rights. I’m in year 11 at and about to go into my last year of school-I love philosophy and art and want to get into law or politics after university.

When I was 3 weeks old my sister Laura was diagnosed with autism, she was only 3. Laura’s autism is severe and it means she will never be able to live an independent life. Unfortunately the level of help families receive in Australia means my parent could be looking after her for the rest of their lives. Helping families with children with a disability is something I’m very passionate about. I’m currently working to create a siblings drama group ran by and for children with a disabled brother or sister – drama classes were something that helped me cope when I was younger, and something many other siblings I know with a disabled brother or sister, also enjoy. Having the class run by older youth that have been through the same situation can be a very positive experience, especially for the younger kids currently going through similar experiences-having someone to talk to who understands.
I’ve spoken on this issue (more specifically respite for families) in Victorian Youth Parliament –passing a bill, which has been passed onto the relevant minister for consideration. This was one of the most difficult and amazing experience I’ve ever had, having before then, rarely spoken about my sister but I’ve realised since then that by raising peoples awareness of this issue then maybe my situation and ones like mine will change-getting more support from the government and those around us.
