DeforestAction: Project Borneo

25 young leaders have been selected for the pioneer DeforestACTION project aimed at protecting forests, working with local communities and saving orangutans.
DeforestACTION is a global action project involving millions of students from around the world who want to play an active role in stopping deforestation. The project is supported by TakingITGlobal and Microsoft Partners in Learning. We've teamed up with acclaimed conservationist Dr. Willie Smits to create awareness about the destruction caused by deforestation, restore a full forest eco-system and provide a sustainable livelihood for the local community.

Award-winning production company Virgo Productions is developing a 3D feature documentary about the project in collaboration with National Geographic Entertainment. Shooting will take place over 100 days in Borneo. Cathy Henkel, (The Burning Season, The Man who Stole my Mother’s Face) will produce and direct 100 Days in the Jungle: Project Borneo 3D, to be shot by acclaimed cinematographer Don McAlpine (Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet, Wolverine) and Paul Nichola (Cane Toads: The Conquest 3D). A TV series is in development with National Geographic for the second 100 days.

DeforestACTION is selecting 12 young team leaders to lead this global action project - and feature in the 3D movie. Submissions and voting for the applicants have now closed!

A short list of 50 was announced in early May. A top 25 was announced in early June.

All 25 will have a leading role in the project. A smaller group will head to Borneo in September for an orientation and reconniassance trip to meet the local communities and assess the scale of the challenge. They will return in February next year for 80 days to implement their action plans. Throughout the project, they will connect with the world though the web, providing updates to the millions of students across the globe who are responsible for developing and driving the project.

Amelia, thanks for the info about the "Autumn Ginge"!

Jessica, most of commercial music are copyrighted and you need express permission from the artist.
However, many musicians choose to release their songs under Creative Commons licenses, which give you the legal right to use it.
If you don't know if the music you picked is free to use, it's better not to use it.

I've made a new video with some interesting zoom in from space to Borneo as well as some amateurish but fun pseudo-3D special effects at the end. check it out here:

don't forget to rate/vote for it if you like it!
There are some very interesting and passionate people in this community, great job and good luck everyone!

I can't thank my university enough for their support! http://www-public.jcu.edu.au/jcnn/makingnews/JCUPRD1_073806 This is an article included in James Cook University's fortnightly email, highlighting the aims of DeforestAction's Project Borneo as well as my commitment to such an effort - thanks heaps JCNN!

I encourage everyone to take part in the discussion forums here at TIG! There are a number of threads going related to the palm oil issue. Lots of information and resources for those that are interested, and it's only growing. Please, add your voice! {:(|) -SP

New (and old!) entrants, this is an example of the type of thing the discussion boards can keep you abreast of. The Indonesian government announced just yesterday that the *much* delayed presidential decree to enforce a moratorium on new forest concessions will be issued next month. Sounds great, right? Well, it's a step in the right direction, but in the discussion boards we'll get into the details in the days ahead (the devil is always in the details). Oil palm plantations are expected to be hard hit, but the moratorium will NOT apply for permits "for strategic national development, including geothermal and oil and gas exploration, power plants and large-scale rice and sugar plantations." I encourage you each to visit the Environment Forum to learn more on this and other related matters!

I've found this really interesting clip on youtube that talks about the history of oil and where it has lead us. It may not be directly about deforestation, but as all you conservationists know, everything is connected - this is really worth the watch.

awesome, thanks stierney :) I hope everyone enjoyed Earth Hour last night!? Could definitely do that more often!

Steve Patriarco

Thanks for the link Sean! There is plenty everyone can do to get involved right now. There is no need to wait until June! If you're interested, check out the link below for a TIG forum thread that will supply you with a wealth of public outreach and activism resources related to the destruction of Indonesia's rich forest ecosystems. The thread is growing by the day. Get (and share) the tools you need to run your own public awareness events, to contact appropriate companies and governments and to make more informed purchases! {:(|)

stierney, thank you so much for the link. This week Im taking year 6 students into Malaysia for a nature awareness and conservation trip and I will definitely show this deforestACTION school project to the teachers. Portals for proactive action like this are exactly what the world needs. I've never been filled with more hope.

nikolai

so giving people 3 votes is a good idea, but shouldn't they be limited to only voting for each person one time? If the same person votes for me 3 times it should only be counted once.

Daniel Carter

@Nikolai: That sounds like a bug. Hopefully the people counting votes only count the first vote in such a situation.

Kia Bicknell

Hey, TIG will be amouncing the 10 winners, how are they announcing it? Will it be on T.v, inbox on this website, or what? Does anyone know?

Steve Patriarco

Tira, please add your voice to the thread on the moratorium (see below). I've been swamped at work the past few days, but we'll be getting into the thick of the details there. Yes - bureaucracy, but also a tremendous amount of push and pull between different stakeholders with interests the forestry/agro sectors. There was a long fought battle between two versions of the decree - one stricter than the other, but both leaving *much* to be desired. As you likely know, the final version is full of loopholes that can and will be exploited in the months and years ahead.

Girl Scout cookies are an extremely popular and iconic treat here in the US. Getting manufacturers to remove palm oil from them would be a hugely symbolic victory. I must second Fabrice's encouragement that people sign the petition launched by two young scouts. Madi and Rhiannon are long-time supporters of Orangutan Outreach and they deserve our help! In the future, if you're looking for targeted petitions like these (or have some that you would like to share with others) there is an activism resources thread for the palm oil, timber, and paper/pulp industries at

Hey guys! I just got a plug on BBC Bristol, and I'm going on Whitechapel FM in London on Weds. I've also managed to put a piece in my University newspaper and the Positive News website (http://www.positivenews.org.uk/) which should be up in the next few days and has 10s of thousands of supporters! Let's get the word out about this incredible project and push through the next few weeks to get people enthused!

I just found out this morning that I won my 2012 Fulbright Research Grant to Indonesia (Borneo)!!! All the more reason why I'm giving my candidacy for Project Borneo 3d EVERYTHING I've got. If I can learn from my longtime hero, Dr. Smits, I can bring those tools and that knowledge with me to the communities around the Gunung Palung National Park (home to the single largest population of orangutans left on Earth). Only if we greatly expand alternative livelihood initiatives in these communities can we hope to stem the tide of destruction in this critical last stronghold of orangutan habitat. Pedal to the metal. I'm determined! {:(|)

Congratulations Steve!

Wow, that's fantastic Steve! Congratulations :)
