Awesome!! Proud of you!
Looks like such an awesome opportunity to do some good in the world! Good luck!! x
Hey Tom,
We definitely do!!! In answer to your question ‘do I believe conservation is taught enough in schools?’ I would have to say, it depends, as every school has it’s own focus. Some schools value teaching their students to be environmentally responsible citizens more than others. It usually takes one or a few committed teachers to initiate a program, like your Mum has, to motivate others. As I work in a catholic school there is a lot of awareness and support for the poor/homeless through organizations such as Caritas, which I think is fantastic! The schools I’ve been at have had compost systems with food scraps, recycling bins, gardens to grow our own vegetables, as well as many different projects teaching about living sustainably and giving students an understanding of the interconnectedness of ecosystems. So my experience has been positive.
What does worry me, is that at some schools the focus sometimes falls a little strongly on standardised testing, so called ‘teaching to the test!’ Also there is the reality that, despite many teachers caring about conservation, with a crowded curriculum across all Learning Areas (Maths and Literacy etc), plus extra school based activities, it can leave little time to teach about conservation. Especially if its not the teachers number one passion.
With that said though, in my years of teaching, where I have always focused strongly on environmental studies/conservation, including ‘adopting’ endangered animals, parents and teachers have always been supportive.
Sorry that is so long.. but I think it was a good question, I could go on even :) What does your Mum think?
Also, I think your video is great (nice suit)! I really believe u deserve this! Congratulations on getting a new sister.. that’s lovely! In my clip there is a photo of me in an orphanage I visited in Siagon. It is called Phu My, the children’s situations are heartbreaking! Adoption is such a wonderful thing!
