She has outlived her husband and eldest son, lived through a depression in a remote community and supported four children alone for many years. My grandmother is a very wise woman with a keen eye and sharp sense of humor. She had no choice but to move to a retirement home recently, for her bad days have become dangerous to her health. We have had to sell many of her things, including her house to pay for her care. This breaks my heart as she is a proud woman, popular in her community, respected and loved. She has kept her chin up and taught me to not be sad for her, as she rolls with the punches and has endless stories for my children, and years of experience for us to feed from. My grandmother does not feel sorry for herself, she does not cry from the frustration as I do for her. She knows the circle and cycles of life and accepts it for what it is. Sometimes cry for the time that will be stolen from my children when she has passed away, and the lessons I learned from her that I may someday forget. I then remember her strength and serenity, and try to simply support her, visit her, write to her and love her. She deserves my time and not my guilt, for not being able to understand or help her more. Respect her image and know that it may someday reflect your own....
